Play as you please, O Hero, in the world!

Ulladu Narpadu anubandha - Shloka 27

"‘Seeming to have enthusiasm and delight,
seeming to have excitement and aversion,
seeming to exercise initiative and perseverance, and yet without
attachment, play, O hero, in the world.
Released from all the bonds of attachment and with equanimity
of mind, acting outwardly in all situations in accordance with
the part you have assumed, play as you please,
O hero, in the world.’ [Yoga Vasishta, 5 – 18, verses 24-26.]"

I have now and then wondered, how to be in the world the way Sage Vasishta advised Lord Rama to be in the world - to act as if one is indulged and yet remain unattached internally. I tired "acting" indulged - only that in a matter of few seconds, I would get lost in the "act"! I have found it nearly impossible to seem indulged and yet maintain innner detachment. Now I feel it probably doesn't matter how you seem outside - detached or attached; what is important is to be detached from inside. If we try to see how we appear to others, we are only getting distracted from the detached state. How we are in the inner world should matter more than the same in outer world.
