Love song or devotional song???

This blog is different from my previous ones, in the sense that here m not putting forth my confusions, but my opinion.

Many a times, I can actually get into spiritual mood when I listen to movie songs. Love/sad songs, to be precise. I think most of the love songs can be related to a Bhakta's devotion towards his Lord or his yearning for the Lord. The sad songs can be related to as the pain undergone by the bhakta bcoz of the seperation of the bhakta from his Lord. I was making this point to my mom, when both my mom and brother, totally argued against. I didn’t try hard to substantiate it and i just dropped the topic. After that, my mom happened to watch Morari Bapu's discourse on one of the spiritual channels on the TV. There, in his discourse, he said, a bhakta(I don’t remember who) told his Lord, don’t forget to keep up ur promise, and started singing the song from Hindi classics, "Jo waada kiya woh nibhaana padega". (After that, my mom cud c what I was trying to say the other day and admitted that I was right.) Similarly, there are many songs that actually can be related to a bhakta's sentiments. Of course, when I say love songs I mean, pure love songs and not the Imraan Hashmi type of songs, which r more of lust songs than love songs.

And many a times not the whole song is applicable, but only few lines, like, in DDLJ, we have the song "tujhe dekha.. " The initial lines, I think, can relate a bhakta's sentiments towards the Lord, like "After seeing u, o Lord! I know what bhakti is(what the gr8 bhaktas meant when they talked abt bhakti) ". In the same song, u also have a line. "tune aawaaz di, dekh mein aagayi" which can b actually thot of as Lord's words to His bhakta's. Tha/ts definitely the kind of assurance that Lord wud give to His devotees, no matter how materialistic the "bhaktas" are, if u go by the Gita. Similarly, in Dil to pagal hai, we can say, "pyaar kar" song can b said as words by the scriptures, which say that we need to love the Lord, be devoted to Him. Instead of taking it as "insaan se pyaar kar", we can take it as "Bhagwan se pyaar kar". And, in the same movie, the title song can b taken as "dil to pagal hai" as "paagal" for the Lord. As far as the sad songs are concerned, we can take them as our complaint against Our Loving Lord. For example, the song "Tujha yaad na meri aayi kisise ab kya kehna, dil roya ki ankh bhar aayi" can b "dedicated" to our Lord, saying that He is not taking care of us, His Bhaktas, saying that He forgot us during our tough times.

So, what I am trying to say here is that everything depends on the way we think abt it, our "school of thots". If we start making every obstacle an opportunity, then, nothing gr8 than that! Tomorrow, in the neighborhood, if they play the love songs loudly, then, instead of cribbing that they r disturbing our meditation, and we can relate it to our Lord, we wud only gain more mental strength and not ruin the peace of mind!

Excellently 'thought'!!
Unlike the previous post, this time you have no confusion in ur venting.

It has happened to me many times, that I get disturbed by such songs, during Vichara/reading. Next time, i'll surely try to check for the 'devotion' involved in a 'love' song.

Infact, you can extend/unite ur imagination of 'Love' in a love song as something b/w ANY two eternal 'selves'. Be it 'I' and 'God' (as u have thot) or ... 'boy' and 'girl'(as how a movie lyricist thot). Its all the SAME.

i appreciate the fact tht u r trying to relate things, which seem to be completely different. this kind of approach will surely take u places, as i feel things r inter-related. tht wud another dimension to ur thinking n pbm solving capability.

This article has reopened my long standing doubt. Genreally luv songs praise the other partner. so, it wud mean, v r praising God. I donot understand, y wud God hear sumbodys praises n b impressed by that !!?? he knows everything. he knows, who luvs him n who praises him !

Your post echoed some of my thoughts when I hear a few hindi film songs. One reason for this might be that hindi movie songs are greatly inspired the sufi tradition where the same lyrics are applicable for the Lord and a lover. This confirms that we see/hear/feel outside what we are Inside. Its like tuning our mind to a particular channel. If we tune it to the Lord, everything will be permeated by Her.
Sri Ramakrishna would see the intoxication of divine bliss in the inebriated dance and singing of drunken men in front of Liquor shop and go into Samadhi!
In the bhakti tradition we can cultivate any of the 3 relationships with God which would greatly in our spiritual progess.
God as the Mother/Father
God as a friend ( like the Cowherds of Brindavan for Krishna)& God as a lover( Like the Gopis love towards Krishna)
